Full Backyard Overhaul with Pavers, Gazebo, and Retaining Walls

Most backyards we take on have the same problem - unused, uneven space that just sits there. No real place to sit, no separation between levels, and grass that eats up every weekend. This one had all of that. The goal was to turn it into something the homeowners could actually use every single day.

We started from the ground up. The paver patio became the foundation of everything - literally. A large, well-bordered stone patio with a dark contrasting edge band gives the space a clean, finished look while creating a solid base for the gazebo. The gazebo itself sits right off the house with full mesh screens on all sides, which means you can use it comfortably without fighting bugs. The seating fits perfectly under the covered roof, and the metal top keeps it protected year-round.

The level change in the yard was handled with tiered retaining walls and a set of paver steps that connect the patio level up to the lawn above. We used a mix of block retaining walls and natural lava rock borders around the planting beds, which adds some texture and breaks up what could have been a very flat, uniform look. The steps are wide and easy to navigate, which matters when you're moving between spaces with drinks in hand.

Fresh sod was laid on the upper level for a clean, usable lawn, and artificial turf was installed in a separate zone closer to the house for a no-maintenance green area. Planting beds along the retaining wall run were filled with lavender, marigolds, echinacea, and other perennials - giving the space real color without needing a lot of fuss. A new cedar fence wraps the full perimeter, keeping everything private and tying the whole yard together visually.

What came out of it is a backyard with clearly defined spaces - a covered seating area, a paver patio, a clean lawn, low-maintenance planting beds, and solid hardscape holding it all in place. Every element does a job. Nothing is just there for show.
